Reading The Vixen after Prose’s Blue Angel was great fun. As mentioned in that book’s response, she is such a good writer with an almost effortless set of skills, writing books that matter – how fun and elusive. They fly by - though they might have benefitted from an editor. The Vixen produces at least two false endings but still holds its own. As evidenced by these two novels, Francine Prose has a rare ability to create realistic male protagonists. She can take them apart, almost satirize them but with a sense of humor, an accuracy and a sincere empathy that is not just credible but rare in this day and age. A good beach or plane read, maybe a bit more substantive than either, it is an easy book to recommend – which I do wholeheartedly.
